3 Creative Ways You Can Use A Self-Storage Unit

by Anni Heikkinen

Typically, people only consider renting out a self-storage unit when decluttering or moving to a new home. It is often seen as a temporary place to store old furniture, clothes, or collections.

However, with a little creativity, these units can be more than a storage site for your items. You could use a self-storage unit for unconventional purposes. Below are other fun and creative ways to use your storage unit.

1. A Greenhouse

Although it may seem unconventional, there are storage facilities whose units are primarily used for gardening. Most people lack adequate space in their homes to grow and nurture a wide range of houseplants.

In addition, there are many types of indoor plants such as Devil's Ivy and Chinese Evergreen that are potentially dangerous to pets and impossible to keep as houseplants. Your indoor plants can thrive in climate-controlled self-storage units turned into greenhouses with the right fertilizer, humidity, and artificial lighting.

2. An Art Studio

You can move your painting, drawings, and sculptures from your home and into a self-storage space. Turning your storage unit into an art studio can keep you away from distractions in your homes, like the dog barking or the sound of the dryer. This move will save you money as you don't need to hire expensive places to display your work.

A climate-controlled self-storage unit has the ideal temperature to protect your artwork from heat damage. If humidity is regulated, you don't have to worry about paint running and ruining your artwork. When storing your artwork in a self-storage unit, you may want to protect it from elements in the air. Even with a climate-controlled unit, wrap your artwork in acid-free paper to avoid having to redo your piece.

3. An Emergency Storage

If you live in a region affected by natural disasters, you may want to be prepared for when disaster strikes. You can use a self-storage unit to store an emergency kit that you may need in case your home is inaccessible. Your kit may include first-aid items, toiletries, batteries, flashlights, clothes, blankets, and non-perishable food.

Keep copies of your car keys and important paperwork, including insurance documents. Also, consider storing your valuables in a self-storage unit to ensure their safety during home emergencies like house fires or leaking roofs. Having your emergency supplies kept in a self-storage unit offers you convenient access and security in times of crisis.

About Me

Storage Units Make Spring Cleaning Easier

Including my husband and I, we have a family of six, but we live in a smaller house to help stash away more money in our children's college funds. Our family does a big house spring cleaning every year, and up until a few years ago, it used to be a lot more stressful. It got a lot easier when we decided to start renting a storage unit. Now, we keep our winter clothes in the unit during the summer and vice versa, and we store items we only use occasionally. Not having so much "stuff" around the house just makes it a lot easier to keep our house clean and free of clutter. I have learned a lot about storage units since we started renting ours, so I thought I would start a blog to share my tips on to help anyone who needs them!
